Description
What kind of wine it is
Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva by Oddero is a Piedmontese red wine with a controlled and guaranteed designation of origin, characterised by a rigorous profile. It is produced exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes, and its maturation in Austrian oak barrels for almost forty months shapes its austere structure, ensuring extraordinary longevity. To the eye, it displays an intense, clear garnet ruby colour. The bouquet is layered, with notes of blackberry and rose enriched by balsamic hints of tobacco, liquorice, cinchona and wet limestone. On the palate, this Barolo Riserva reveals a broad and mineral sip, supported by lively freshness and an important yet polished tannic texture, finishing with a long, dry aftertaste.
Where it comes from
The roots of this wine lie in the renowned cru Vigna Rionda, located in Serralunga d’Alba. The rows of vines stretch across the hilltop, at around three hundred and sixty metres above sea level, where the full southern exposure ensures optimal ripening of the grapes. The vines, some up to fifty years old, guarantee very low yields, favouring exceptional concentration and perfect balance of flavour. Oddero cultivates this historic vineyard while preserving its territorial identity, releasing an extremely limited production to the market.
How it is produced
The production process begins in October with a rigorous manual harvest and meticulous selection of the bunches. In the cellar, after destemming and crushing, fermentation continues for almost a month with daily pump-overs to gently extract the noble components from the skins. Once malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine undergoes a long rest in Austrian oak barrels which consolidates its structure. Subsequent storage at controlled temperature allows for harmonious evolution, ideal for enhancing the character of Nebbiolo, perfect when paired with game and mature cheeses.
History and Curiosities
This wine embodies the dedication of the Oddero family, rooted in Piedmont since the 18th century. The prized grapes come from the renowned Vigna Rionda in Serralunga d’Alba, situated at 360 metres above sea level with an ideal southern exposure. Produced from historic vines dating back to 1972, this exceptional Barolo Riserva represents a true oenological rarity. Thanks to a limited production of around three thousand bottles per year, it boasts extraordinary longevity, making it perfect for vertical tastings that reveal its elegant evolution.

The history of today’s winery is inextricably tied to that of Giacomo Oddero, born in 1926 and grandson of the first Giacomo in the family (whom he was named after). Under Giacomo’s guidance, Poderi e Cantine Oddero took on its current productive configuration, extending vineyard property, increasing bottle production, and upholding a high quality that today is recognized worldwide.
The legacy of Giacomo Oddero is carried on today by his daughter Mariacristina, who entered the family business near the end of the 1990s, and grandchildren Isabella and Pietro, who represent the seventh generation of a family with over a century and a half of vinicultural tradition behind them.
