Description

Still red Gattinara DOCG, 14% ABV, produced by Nervi Conterno. 0.75 l bottle, 2021 vintage. A Gattinara born from Nervi Conterno's passion for the Nebbiolo of Alto Piemonte, particularly from the Molsino vineyard, a true natural amphitheater facing south. Founded in 1905 by Luigi Nervi, the winery has always been a benchmark for Nebbiolo production in Valsesia. The bouquet is an explosion of sensual and varied Alpine and Mediterranean aromas. Notes of myrtle and lavender blend with those of cherry, cassis, cypress wood, star anise, juniper berry, and nutmeg. Mineral and salty notes. On the palate, it is juicy, enveloping, and caressing, vibrant, supple, and taut. The texture is consistent, cohesive, and intact. Tannins are rounded and lively. Intense minerality in the very long finish.

Nervi is the oldest winery in Gattinara, a small town in Upper Piedmont nestled at the foot of the Alps, in a fascinating region rich in winemaking history. Here, on volcanic soils rich in iron, magnesium, and potassium, one of the most distinctive expressions of Nebbiolo in Piedmont is born, cultivated in a terroir unique for its climate, altitude, and geological composition. The grape variety, locally known as Spanna, finds in these conditions the ideal foundation to express refined minerality, vibrant acidity, and elegant structure—hallmarks of the Gattinara DOCG.

Founded in 1905 by Luigi Nervi, the winery has always been a benchmark for Nebbiolo production in Valsesia, also known as the greenest valley in Italy. The vineyards stretch across spectacular purple-hued slopes, due to the presence of quartz porphyry of volcanic origin, which gives the wines a distinct character compared to those from the Langhe or Roero regions.

One of the estate’s most iconic crus is Vigna Molsino, a natural amphitheater facing south, cradling the vines and allowing for slow, complete ripening. In this unique setting, the winery experienced a major turning point in 2018 with the arrival of Roberto Conterno—already renowned for his Barolo production at the Giacomo Conterno winery in Monforte d’Alba. With the acquisition of Nervi and its 27 hectares of vineyards, Conterno chose to invest in the potential of Nebbiolo from Upper Piedmont, helping to elevate the prestige of Gattinara DOCG on an international scale.
