Description

What kind of wine is it

Krug Grande Cuvée is a Brut Champagne produced using the rigorous Traditional Method from a harmonious blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. This wine stands out for its full and creamy style, the result of blending numerous different wines. On the nose, the Champagne reveals aromas of flowers, citrus, ripe and dried fruit, enriched with marzipan, gingerbread, hazelnut, brioche and honey. On the palate, it is delicate yet intense, enlivened by fine and lively bubbles, with balanced acidity and a long finish on notes of lemon, almond, nougat and eucalyptus.

Where does it come from

This wine originates in France, in the Champagne region, the chosen territory for Krug. The cuvée is created from a rigorous selection of grapes from multiple vineyards, chosen to ensure perfect stylistic continuity. Its origin is reflected in a fresh and precise profile, balancing structure and aromatic intensity. The skilful blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier defines a complex character, where notes of white-fleshed fruit, citrus and hints of bread and dried fruit play a central role.

How is it produced

The production follows the Traditional Method, starting from a cuvée created by blending numerous base wines from different vintages, with a significant presence of reserve wines. After the blend is created, refermentation takes place in the bottle, followed by a prolonged ageing on the lees. This period of rest in the cellar allows for the development of pronounced aromatic complexity and a creamy texture. The final result integrates floral notes, citrus, barley sugar and fruit jelly in a sip of profound persistence.

History and Curiosities

Founded in Reims in 1843 by Joseph Krug, the Maison continues to honour his bold vision with the Krug Grande Cuvée 173rd Edition. This Champagne, created from the 2017 harvest, is the result of a masterful blend of over 120 wines from around ten different vintages. Its extraordinary depth matures in the cellar for 6-10 years, ensuring a generous and unmistakable style. Awarded 97 points by Falstaff and James Suckling, this iconic cuvée embodies timeless elegance.

The House was established in Reims in 1843, by Joseph Krug, a visionary non-conformist with an uncompromising philosophy. Having understood that the true essence of Champagne is pleasure itself, his dream was to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Paying close attention to the vineyard’s character, respecting the individuality of each plot and its wine, as well as building an extensive library of reserve wines from many different years allowed Joseph Krug to fulfil his dream.

With a very original approach to Champagne making, he decided to go beyond the notion of vintage to create the most generous expression of Champagne, every year. Thus, he founded a House in which all Champagnes are of the same level of distinction.

Six generations of the Krug family have perpetuated this dream, enriching the founder’s vision and savoir faire.
