Description

Still red wine from Tuscany, 15% ABV, produced by Isole e Olena. 100% Sangiovese, 2021 vintage. A wine that represents the excellence of Tuscan Sangiovese, the fruit of Paolo de Marchi's passion and dedication to quality. Cepparello is the name of a stream that flows adjacent to a densely planted vineyard. The soil is calcareous-clayey with occasional marly patches. It matures for 18 months in French and American oak barrels, then ages for another year in the bottle. Aromas of cherry, black cherry, and blackcurrant, along with hints of bitter chocolate, set against a spicy background. Ruby red in color, tending toward violet. The tannins are rough, and the acidity is still crisp but well-balanced. The finish is dry, recalling the opening fruit. The finish is medium-long.

This estate, run by Paolo de Marchi, is yet another that has seen a dramatic rise in quality over the last few decades. Paolo's family, originally from Piedmont, purchased the estate in the 1960s. His attention to detail in both the vineyard and the winery was the driving force that turned quality around. Experience working a vintage or two in California helped, but no doubt the input received from oenological consultant Donato Lanati has also been of significance.

The wines have Cepparello at their head, a barrique-aged Sangiovese classified as an IGT - because at the time of its creation in the 1980s a wine comprising 100% Sangiovese could not legally be labelled as Chianti. There is a Chianti Classico and a Vin Santo, as well as some excellent wines from the Collezione de Marchi label, including a Syrah called Eremo, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay.
