Description
What kind of wine it is
‘A Rina by Girolamo Russo is a refined still red wine that faithfully interprets the character of Etna Rosso. Made from a blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes, it appears a bright ruby red in the glass. The aromatic profile reveals remarkable complexity, offering clear notes of cherry and plum interwoven with hints of leather and tobacco. On the palate, the sip stands out for its freshness and structure, with soft, velvety tannins guiding the tasting experience. The balance of flavours ensures a pleasant drink, culminating in a silky and persistent finish.
Where it comes from
The roots of this wine lie on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, a region with unique soil and climate characteristics. The vineyards are spread across the districts of San Lorenzo, Feudo, Calderara Sottana and Feudo di Mezzo, areas renowned for the identity of Etna Rosso. The altitude and particular environmental conditions allow the grapes to reach optimal ripeness, enriching the wine’s aromatic depth. This meticulous territorial selection enables a clear and faithful expression of the authentic volcanic essence of its native soil.
How it is produced
The wine is born from the careful selection and subsequent blending of this indigenous blend, sourced from grapes grown in the most suitable Etna plots. The cellar work aims to preserve a fresh and complex profile, enhancing the purity of the fruit and its aromatic definition. The vinification process seeks to balance structure with the softness of the tannins, avoiding stylistic excesses. The result is a harmonious wine, capable of offering a balanced drink and highlighting the natural varietal elegance of the original grapes.

This is the north face of Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna, in the north-eastern corner of Sicily.
The Russos have 26 hectares of land in and around Passopisciaro, with 15 hectares of vineyards surrounded by olive and hazelnut groves. The vineyards are high up, between 650 and 780 metres above sea level, inland from the beautiful town of Taormina. Many of the free-standing bush vines are over 80 years old, surviving in harmony with Etna’s black, mineral-rich volcanic soil.
Giuseppe works the vineyards organically and makes the wines himself. He vinifies each parcel separately, seeking out their individual identities in a series of wines that reflect the diverse character of their terroirs.
Some lava flows are very recent, too recent even to plant on.
The area is broken up into sectors known as ‘contradas’. Each contrada has a name and is linked to one of Etna’s townships. Read more
