Description

What kind of wine it is

Federico Graziani Etna Chinato Officinale di Monte is an aromatised fortified red wine based on a solid foundation of Etna Rosso. It displays a deep ruby red colour, enhanced by amber highlights, and releases intense aromas of Mediterranean scrub, medicinal herbs and balsamic nuances. The palate is warm and enveloping, characterised by a precise balance between sweetness and the typical bitter note of cinchona. Conceived as a meditation wine, it expresses its full potential when served at 14-16 °C, ideally accompanying dark chocolate, spiced desserts and blue cheeses.

Where it comes from

This chinato is crafted in Sicily, from vineyards located on the northern and north-western slopes of Mount Etna. The vines stretch at altitudes between 600 and 1,200 metres, sinking their roots deep into rich volcanic soils. The manual cultivation of these small plots is constantly adapted to the mountain’s variable microclimate. This unique terroir forges a base wine with a bold profile, able to embrace the infusion of botanicals while preserving its pronounced structure. The extreme environment encourages the concentration of aromatic components, offering a faithful expression of the territory.

How it is produced

The production process is based on the maceration in wine of plant extracts and precious aromatic botanicals. The blend includes extracts of Cinchona Succirubra and Cinchona Calisaya with local elements such as fig and olive leaves, bay, capers and prickly pear flowers. Careful management of the sugar content perfectly balances the bitter strength of the roots, outlining a marked herbal and spicy complexity. This meticulous work results in a broad and structured profile in the glass, capable of evolving positively over time and ensuring a remarkable longevity of 10-15 years.

History and Curiosities

Born on the northern slopes of the volcano, this artisan Etna Chinato combines the skilful manual care of small plots with a rich tradition of liqueur making. Officinale di Monte comes to life from a refined Etna Rosso, enriched with cinchona extracts and local botanicals, including prickly pear flowers, capers and bay leaves. The result of vines grown on precious volcanic soils up to 1,200 metres above sea level, it offers an enveloping sip for meditation, capable of evolving in the bottle for up to fifteen years.

From this winery
Federico Graziani vineyards are located at the foot of Mount Etna, between 600 and 1,200 metres above sea level, on the northern and north-western slopes. This is a mysterious and special place with a unique ecosystem with remarkable climatic variability and a variegated landscape teeming with life.

For the past 2000 years, people here have been growing vineyards in small plots of land reclaimed from the mountain, living in symbiosis with the volcano and adapting to the power and unpredictability of its elements. This is slow and ancient work, carried out by hand with toil, passion, and respect.
