Description
What kind of wine it is
Saffredi by Fattoria Le Pupille is a Tuscan red wine created from a blend of grapes including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Vinification in steel with extended maceration gives it a well-defined structure and perfectly integrated tannins. Maturation in French oak barrels shapes an elegant profile. On the nose, notes of blueberry, blackcurrant, morello cherry, tobacco and sweet spices stand out, finishing with a very persistent aftertaste.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the Saffredi vineyard in Pereta, Maremma, situated at two hundred and eighty metres above sea level, using spur-pruned cordon and Guyot training systems. The roots explore a sandy soil rich in galestro and iron minerals, meeting clay at depth. This distinctive soil composition imparts a bright, intense ruby colour and contributes to the development of a dense, harmonious texture.
How it is produced
Harvesting follows the ripening times, starting in September for Merlot and continuing into October for the other varieties, maintaining low yields. Fermentation at controlled temperature is followed by careful maceration on the skins to extract colour and substance. An eighteen-month rest in French oak barrels completes the process, setting the tension and elegant identity of the wine.
History and Curiosities
Saffredi is the true icon of Fattoria Le Pupille, a Toscana IGT born in the heart of the Maremma from the vision of Elisabetta Geppetti and the genius of Giacomo Tachis. Dedicated to Fredi, the inspiration behind the project launched in 1978, this masterpiece combines Bordeaux varieties grown on soils rich in galestro. The extraordinary 2022 vintage, awarded 99 points by James Suckling, reflects the winery's dedication: matured for 18 months in French oak barriques, it offers a warm and harmonious sip, characterised by dense tannins and an elegant persistence.

In the course of the years, the originating core of the winery effectively enriched itself of new grape particles, reaching today 75 hectares of vineyards, distributed like many mosaic pieces between many stunning areas of Maremma. Another 20 hectares are destined to the olives, and then cereals and cork oaks alternate with pastures reaching up to 420 hectares of overall property. Read more
