Description

What kind of wine is it

Clos des Maladries by Etienne Calsac is a Grand Cru Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut, made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes. Produced using the Traditional Method, it employs indigenous yeasts to trigger spontaneous fermentations. The glass reveals a fine perlage, fruity aromas, citrus notes and pronounced mineral hints, offering a fresh, taut and balanced taste on the palate.

Where does it come from

The grapes come from Clos des Maladries, a rare single-parcel cuvée located in Avize, in the heart of the Côte des Blancs. The vineyard benefits from a southern exposure and sinks its roots into deep chalky soils. This composition imparts a clear mineral character and innate freshness to the Chardonnay. The agricultural management includes working with horses, reflecting a genuine respect for the land.

How is it produced

The must ferments spontaneously before maturing partly in oak barrels and the remainder in stainless steel tanks, without any filtration or clarification. The prise de mousse, a fundamental feature of the Traditional Method, shapes the organoleptic profile, while careful bottle ageing consolidates its harmonious and persistent character. The Extra Brut dosage preserves expressive purity, keeping the energy of the sip intact.

History and Curiosities

This vintage from Etienne Calsac represents one of the rare clos of Champagne, a single-parcel cuvée that showcases the excellence of the Grand Cru of Avize. The grapes, 100% Chardonnay, grow on chalky soils with southern exposure and are cultivated with the help of a horse, resulting in an Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs with genuine charm. The artisanal vinification follows the traditional method, with spontaneous fermentations and no filtration. The skilful ageing, divided between oak and steel, delivers a long and balanced sip, a pure expression of the 2021 vintage.

From this winery
Like the earth, wine is a living product. Plowing the soil and planting cover crops are the techniques that allow the terroir to best express itself. The roots of the vines descend deeply into the earth to search for the elements that give the grapes their unique character. The parcels are vinified separately in order to highlight the difference between the crus, and to allow them to be blended together harmoniously. Read more
