Description
What kind of wine it is
The Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chaupin Rouge from Domaine de la Janasse is a rigorous and profound expression of Grenache from the Rhône Valley. The intense purple-red colour heralds an aromatic profile marked by notes of small black fruits and violet. On the palate, it displays a powerful yet refined structure, supported by soft and silky tannins that enhance its elegance. Capable of remarkable evolution over time, this wine masterfully accompanies complex flavours, finding its ideal pairing with game dishes, such as venison stew.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from vineyards located in the coolest plots of Chaupin, La Crau and La Janasse. The identity of the terroir lies in the sandy soils, essential for imparting a linear elegance and great tactile finesse to the sip. The intensity of the aromatic profile comes from old vines, some dating back to 1912, which naturally maintain low yields. Domaine de la Janasse cultivates these lands using only natural fertilisers, without resorting to pesticides or herbicides, to ensure perfect agronomic balance and preserve the vital soil aeration.
How it is produced
The process begins with manual harvesting and careful selection in the vineyard. After partial destemming, a twenty-six day maceration takes place with daily punch-downs, essential for controlled extraction of structure. The wine then matures for twelve months in barrels of various sizes. This targeted approach to ageing allows the Grenache to evolve while preserving its varietal identity, thus delivering a balanced gustatory equilibrium between volume and precision.
History and Curiosities
The charm of Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chaupin Rouge lies in its historical roots: it originates from century-old vines planted in 1912, cultivated naturally on sandy soils without the use of pesticides. This extraordinary heritage, covering around seven hectares, gives the production a unique identity. Among the most fascinating curiosities is its remarkable ageing potential: the bottle boasts exceptional longevity, capable of evolving in the cellar for up to twenty-five years from the moment of bottling.

Due to its fragmented structure -more than sixty plots- the area of La Janasse covers a mosaic of terroirs. Thorough research on soil, exposure and microclimates helped to ideally organize the vineyard. White varieties and syrahs were preferably planted on sandy limestones, exposed eastward of the appellation in order to preserve freshness, acidity and fineness. Mourvedres were planted on clay-limestone soils covered with river rocks so as to reach perfect maturity. Read more
