Description
What type of wine is it
Nearco from Col d’Orcia is an intense organic red wine with the Indicazione Geografica Tipica Toscana designation, the result of a careful blend of Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot. The prolonged ageing in French oak barrels shapes its rich aromatic profile, revealing a deep ruby colour and a bouquet characterised by notes of blackberry, spices, vanilla and balsamic nuances. On the palate, it exhibits an enveloping texture, supported by a pleasant freshness and mature tannins, ensuring an elegant finish perfect for pairing with game and aged cheeses.
Where it comes from
The production of Nearco takes place in the heart of the Montalcino area, specifically in the Sant’Angelo in Colle zone. Here, the vineyards extend to about 350 metres in altitude, benefiting from a bright south and south-west exposure that favours the perfect ripening of the grapes. The distinctive character of the wine is forged by medium-textured soils, rich in limestone pebbles, which are fundamental for giving precision and depth to the sip. The agricultural approach fully enhances the international varieties, perfectly integrated into the Sienese wine-growing vocation.
How it is produced
The harvest begins in September and the grapes are vinified separately to preserve the identity of each single batch. Maceration takes place at a controlled temperature for about two weeks in steel vats, followed by malolactic fermentation in concrete tanks. The wine is then transferred to barrels, where natural winter stabilisation precedes an ageing period of twenty-four months. The final blending precedes further bottle ageing, a decisive step to integrate the solid structure and the elegant tannic texture.
History and facts
From the Greek for “new commander”, Col d’Orcia’s Nearco is a prestigious Super Tuscan created to showcase Montalcino’s exceptional terroir through noble international grape varieties. The winery, founded in 1933, vinifies the grapes separately, followed by 24 months of ageing in French oak barriques before the final blending. In 2022, a hot summer tempered by providential August rains ensured an excellent harvest in early September, resulting in an organic red of absolute elegance.

The estate's origins date back to the first half of the 17th century when the family of the Sienese noble knights Della Ciaia established a property in the Sant'Angelo in Colle area that became larger and larger year by year. In the second half of the 19th century, it passed into the hands of the Servadio family and then the Franceschi family.
In 1973, Count Alberto Marone Cinzano took over the estate, intending to contribute to the development and affirmation of Montalcino and its Brunello on world markets.
Our Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento 2016 took second place in the 2024 ‘Enthusiast 100’, the ranking of the best wines of the year signed by the influential American magazine ‘Wine Enthusiast’.
Another wonderful piece of news, which follows Col d'Orcia's nomination as ‘European Winery of the Year’ at the 2024 Wine Star Awards of ‘Wine Enthusiast’ and confirms, for the third consecutive year, our wines at the top of the international rankings and critics. In 2022 the Brunello di Montalcino 2017 entered the top 100 of ‘Wine Spectator’, in 2023 the Poggio al Vento 2016 stood out in the top 100 of ‘James Suckling. Read more
