Description
What kind of wine it is
Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura by Banfi is a Tuscan red wine that precisely expresses the characteristics of the Sangiovese grape. Its aromatic profile opens with notes of plum, cherry, blackberry and raspberry jam, evolving into hints of chocolate, tobacco, vanilla and liquorice. On the palate, it reveals a powerful and muscular body, balanced by sweet and gentle tannins. This balance accompanies a persistent finish, ideal for enhancing game, flavourful meats and mature cheeses, or to be enjoyed as a meditation wine.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from dedicated hillside vineyards, located between 210 and 220 metres above sea level around Poggio alle Mura, in the Siena area. The vines sink their roots into sandy soils of marine origin, characterised by a loamy-sandy texture, abundant stones and Pliocene-age sediments. A low yield per hectare and careful planting density favour the ideal concentration in the bunches, defining the structured and deep profile typical of Brunello di Montalcino.
How it is produced
The process begins with alcoholic fermentation and maceration on the skins for about two weeks, carried out in a combination of steel and wooden vats at a controlled temperature. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation to soften its components. Maturation continues for two years, almost entirely in French oak barrels, with a small portion in Slavonian oak barrels. This period is completed with bottle ageing for twelve months, essential to harmonise every organoleptic nuance before release.
History and Curiosities
Founded in 1978, Banfi produces this elegant Brunello from historic vineyards surrounding the Castello di Poggio alle Mura. The result of a pioneering clonal selection begun in 1982, this noble Tuscan expression rests for two years in fine oak and a further twelve months in the bottle. An organic and sustainable vintage that combines the deep tradition of the region with exceptional ratings, as evidenced by 96 points from James Suckling and 94 from Wine Spectator.
