Renato Ratti

Winery founded by the Barolo innovator, Renato Ratti, in 1965, who on his return from Brazil, where he had been involved in the production of Vermouths and sparkling wines for Cinzano, bought the first small vineyard in Piedmont in the historic cru of Marcenasco, below the Abbazia dell'Annunziata in La Morra, to begin the production of Barolo. An oenologist, writer, and populariser, he soon became a reference point for wine in the Langhe.

Appointed president of the Barolo Consortium and then director of the Asti Consortium, he participated in the drafting of the regulations for the wines of Alba and the DOCG. He wrote numerous books on Piedmontese and Italian wines and produced, for the Ratti Museum, the map of the Barolo vintages and the map of the historical sub-zones of Barolo and Barbaresco, the result of painstaking research. In 1988, after his untimely death, his son Pietro, freshly graduated from the Oenological School of Alba, took over the business.
