Castile and León

Jointed around the large Douro basin and extending over 90,000 square kilometers, the region of Castile and Leon is a place rich in landscapes and diverse microclimates that characterize the landscape richness and the beauty of these territories, preserving more than 70,000 hectares of land for viticulture.
It is here, in this region that are produced from the most ancient times, wines of the most renowned in the world that have therefore obtained the IGP mark that protects its geographical origin; the zone of Bierzo, is famous for the Mencìa grape variety, a variety preserved by the monks of Compostela which produces light and fruity wines. In the historical context, the Old Castile and the Kingdom of León here constituted one of the largest autonomous communities of Spain that with its nine provinces, counts numerous cultural assets defined as world heritage; in these places it is possible to taste the best wines produced in Spain, in ancient cellars that have been operating for generations.
Thanks to its defined Mediterranean climate of continental type, with cold winters and short and warm summers, the region of Castile and Leon, is known above all for the production of red and rosé wines obtained from local grapes and in any case mediterranee. These are vines located on large limestone formations at 850 meters above sea level from which full-bodied wines are obtained and aromatics like the Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Prieto Picudo and Garnasha varieties; as many sophisticated wines are obtained from vines like the Verdejo, Albarín Blanco, Albilllo just to name a few that together with the aforementioned, have obtained the so-called "Do ", or designation of origin.

Information about Castile and León

Region Castile and León
Country Spain
Climate and soil The climate of Castile and León is called continental Mediterranean climate, characterized by long and cold winters, with average temperatures between 4 and 7 ° C in January and short, hot summers (averages from 19 to 22º). However, there are still three-four months of dry summer, typical of the Mediterranean climate. The low rainfall, 450-500 mm annually, appears to be more intense in the lower areas.
History With the fall of the Roman Empire the lands were occupied by the Visigoth tribes. The subsequent arrival of the Muslims and the "reconquista" have a lot to do with the current situation of the Iberian peninsula. In the mountainous area of present-day Asturias, a small Christian kingdom was formed in continuous conflict with the Muslim states present in the Iberian peninsula, referring to the Visigoth-Roman tradition and to Christianity. Progressively, the Christian kingdom expanded towards the South, moving its capital to León, thus establishing the birth of the Kingdom of León. To encourage the repopulation of lands taken from Muslim states, the monarchs granted the "Fueros". León and Castile continued to expand southward, beyond the Duero, in the struggle against the Islamic occupation. In the middle of the Middle Ages the singers tell the great stories of the noble Christians who fought against the Muslim enemy. Nevertheless, Christian and Muslim kings maintained diplomatic relations. A clear example was the Cid Campeador, archetype of the medieval Christian knight, who fought for both Christian and Muslim kings. After the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) the rural areas of present-day Castile and León experienced a loss of inhabitants as a result of emigration to large cities (Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, etc.) or abroad (Germany, France and Switzerland three others). The birth of a powerful industrial nucleus in Valladolid, thanks to the Renault car factory and engineer Manuel Jiménez Alfaro, pushed the region industrially, slowing down the demographic decline. Nonetheless, the current dynamic continues to prove alarming throughout the region, given that general trends continue to be close to the depopulation, with the exception of the city of Valladolid.
Typical products Almost all the vineyards of the Castilla y León region, without land outlets, are located in the Douro Valley at rather high altitudes. Toro and Ribera, areas of quality red wine. The most famous white wines of Castilla y León come from Rueda, where the verdejo grapes, which are thought to have been imported from southern Spain, can give refreshing wines equal to Sauvignon Blanc, whose vine has been planted here more recently. Rueda red is generally obtained from cavernet and tempranillo grapes, although many producers reserve variations using the Vino de la Tierra Castilla y León label.
Typical dishes Roasts are one of the main elements of this regional cuisine, but we must not forget many other dishes, prepared with different types of gastronomic products, which enrich the kitchen giving it personality and that deserve to be known and enjoyed. In Castile and León gastronomy is a cult object. To cite just a few examples, it is sufficient to take part in one of the days dedicated to the lamb, the pig, the hunt, the mushrooms, take part in the ancestral rite of the pig or at the International Trout Week. The cuisine of the area has also been openly appreciated in literary works. Already in the Cantar de Mío Cid were mentioned the culinary virtues of Castile and Leon. In Castiglia they are cooked with care lamb, hare, rabbit, partridge or pork, with migas (fried bread crumbs), trout or marinated. Even the desserts are prepared with care, and some are traditional elaborations of the ancient monasteries and convents, of which they often adopt the name: lazos de San Guillermo, yemas de Santa Teresa, toscas de la Virgen, bizcochos de San Lorenzo, virutas de San José ... that calm the hunger and are a supply for the pilgrims who walk the Camino de Santiago.
