Wood-free calabria wines

Calabria has a long-established wine-making tradition that brings back to the Greek civilization. Despite the commitment and the ability of a few producers with remarkable business performance, this region experienced a decline in the past from which has not fully recovered yet. Despite this, the vine is cultivated mainly in some areas near the sea, with a total production, in 2009, of about 392,000 hectolitre, especially red wines. The most cultivated grape is the Gaglioppo, which represents more than one quarter of the total red grape production, while the Greco Bianco is the most relevant white grape. These vines are both used in the production of Cirò Bianco, Rosato and Rosso, which are the most famous wines of this region. In the inland areas, it is worth mentioning the production of DOC Pollino, a wine based on Gaglioppo and Greco Nero grapes. The production of Greco di Bianco DOC, a delicious rare straw wine, is located in the southern Calabria.
