Tradition has it that a typical small Italian farm (azienda agricola) has a bit of everything - crops, cattle, chickens, vegetables, olive groves, and vines for wine production to keep family, workers and friends supplied with all the best of its locally manufactured goods.
Azienda Agricola Pietro Caciorgna in the heart of Tuscany is one such farm, however with the tremendous difference from others that here organic methods dictate cultivation methods. And, here the youngest son is Paolo Caciorgna - professional oenologist with a great passion for new challenges.
When Paolo in 2000 got the opportunity to make a wine for, and in honor of his family, the Macchie project was started. First vintage was 2004.
A cantina was build over the course of 2009-2011 to facilitate full control over production hence raising quality and allowing for improvements every step of the way from harvest to bottling.
Macchie is the expression of our love towards the art, and culture of the region. A love for life. The image of the three elegant trees is derived from the famous renaissance fresco of Benozzo Gozzoli found in the Cappella dei Magi in Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Via Cavour in Florence. It refers to a period of human disaster, pessimism and grief after numerous wars, deceases and hunger had ruined most of Europe, and devastated the spirit of man. However, despite the misery a new evolution took place – renaissance – ‘rebirth’, and the belief that life is lived for the sake of life, and not for the sake of a proposed life after death. This intellectual transformation gave birth to a new spirit, faith, and creation of beauty.
The fresco symbol pictured on the Macchie label is part of one such beauty. It is designed by artist and friend Dante Albieri. It puts in evidence the elegance, and harmony of the Tuscan landscape, and the impressive capability of Italy’s finest artists. Artists who through their masterpieces from the period of pre-renaissance, and renaissance have made eternal the history and landscapes of Italy, and contributed to the recognition and sharing all around the world of the culture of “fine” and “harmony”.
Also the wine “Macchie”, in its ‘little’, wishes to be a messenger of Tuscan culture and nature, and be so through its image of art and landscapes, through its delicate taste, and through the interpretation of Tuscany’s “Prince” vine “Sangiovese”.
