Meo Camuzet

For more than four centuries, the Méo family has been dedicated to the cultivation of vines and winemaking. The Burgundy village of Selongey, north of the Côte d'Or, is the cradle. Although today, unfortunately, the vine has disappeared, a pressing room dating back to the year 50 attests to the presence of Gallo-Roman vintners. Since the mid-19th century, Méochildren have chosen the path of study. Jean-Nicolas' great-grandfather was a teacher; his grandfather was a bridge engineer, and his father, Jean Méo a technician and mining engineer. Jean would later be elected as a member of the European Parliament and sit on the Paris Council.

It was through Jean Méo's mother, Marcelle Lamarche-Confuron, from an old winemaking family in Vosne (already with a small business) that Méo would set up shop in Vosne-Romanée. Jean Meo's grandmother is the first cousin of Etienne Camuzet, a colourful character. An oenologist in Vosne-Romanée, Etienne Camuzet (1867-1946) was the mayor of the village and more, deputy of the Côte d'Or from 1902 to 1932. In 1920, he had the opportunity to buy the château de Clos de Vougeot with its vines. Still, he did not live there, preferring to house his sharecroppers (with his political activities, he no longer had time to exploit his vineyards). He sold it in November 1944: the château had suffered from the war. He had understood the interest for Burgundy to have a wine temple to help promote it. Etienne Camuzet, therefore, chose to pass it on to the Brotherhood of the Knights Tastevin. As for the vineyards, it is the last 20 hectares of Clos that are for sale. Etienne Camuzet asked his fellow winegrowers in Vosne-Romanée to buy them. He will keep 3 hectares at the foot of the château.

When Etienne Camuzet died in 1946, his daughter, Marie Noirot, inherited her father's property and kept the sharecroppers. But she had no children, and when she died in 1959, she bequeathed the kingdom to her nephew Jean Méo, who by then had already left Vosne Romanée and had been in General de Gaulle's cabinet since 1958. Having regularly rubbed shoulders with his uncle Etienne, who had made him part of the vine cult by teaching respect and love for wine, the last of the Méo family could not stop the saga of the wine family. So he decided to buy the estate, with the help of his father Gaston at first, then his mother. Jean Méo was then able to stay with General de Gaulle and lead a Parisian career that led him to successively lead large companies: ELF, France Soir, The Havas Agency, and the French Petroleum Institute. He was also elected to the European Assembly and sat on the Paris Council. During this period, he relied on four sharecroppers, including the great oenologist Henri Jayer. This was one of the first to make wine by systematically using temperature control, proposing freshness and fruit, and thus embellishing the wine's nose and texture. Jean Méo managed the estate from 1959 to 1984, when he turned to the new generation.

In 1981, Domaine Camuzet became Méo-Camuzet and the first wines bottled under this name are those of the 1983 vintage.
Jean Méo and his wife Nicole had three children: Isabelle, Angeline and Jean-Nicolas. In 1984, Jean Méo offered his son to take over the reins of the estate. Jean-Nicolas, only 20 years old and a student at ESCP (Sup de Co Paris), was not ready to become an oenologist. After 8 days of reflection, he agreed to try, graduated (not without a visit to the University of Burgundy to study oenology) and from the United States at the University of Pennsylvania and then returned to live in Vosne-Romanée in 1989. He began wading in the vineyard area, winemaking with a mentor, his father, but Henri Jayer who, retiring, agreed to share his experience-making technique and his art of winemaking. Christian Faurois, son and grandson of other historic tenants of the estate, taught him the vineyard and passed on his passion for the field. Quickly, Jean-Nicolas, enjoying the wind of change, began to blow through the region, expressed his opinions, sought out new experiences and succeeded in creating his method, which he continued to refine. At that time, bottled sales under the Meo-Camuzet field had already begun (with the 1983 vintage), with Jean Meo's decision to go for major exports, including the United States. Previously, the wines were sold to Beaune or Nuitons merchants and a few bottles stored for the family wore Camuzet or Widow Noirot-Camuzet labelled "Jean Meo, owner Vosne-Romanée. Our new wine from a business school enhances its value by creating a distribution network abroad. It will be selected by leading sommeliers, which explains Meo-Camuzet's unique place in the great restoration.

Since 2008, the sharecroppers have retired, and Jean-Nicolas cultivates all the vineyards on the estate. His main problem is managing the insufficient supply in the face of increasing demand. So in 2003, he decided, together with his sisters, to create a commercial company to respond better to demand and expand his range of more accessible wines. Thus the Méo-Camuzet brothers and sisters were born with a distinct label. But the trade seen by Jean-Nicolas is not traditional. In fact, he buys standing crops in Fixin, Marsannay, Burgundy or elsewhere, but this is much more than just buying grapes because many procedures are carried out during the season by the field teams, and these plots are most he has followed for several years, which allows for a true knowledge of the winemaker. In reality, it is close to a land lease.

Today, the Méo-Camuzet estate is one of the most famous in Burgundy. Jean-Nicolas and his team continue to work on the nose and taste of their wines with respect for nature, love of the soil and commerce. Jean-Nicolas is married. With his wife Nathalie, they had three children, Adrian, born in 1993, in 1996 and Tristan Severin, in 2000. With a new generation of engineers and winemakers, it is too early to write this history page.
