History Vaccarèse is dark-skinned grape planted in minuscule quantities in France's Rhône Valley. It is one of the 13 red grape varieties permitted in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape blend, although it is rarely used because it is so scarce. Outside of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Vaccarèse can be found in minute quantities and is generally known as Brun Argenté. This translates to "brown silvery", which is most likely a reference to the grape's very dark, brownish skin and silvery leaves.
Ampelographic features In the vineyard, Vaccarèse produces large, compact bunches of large berries, which are susceptible to downy mildew and botrytis.
Characteristics of the wine obtained from this grape variety The variety's wines – light-bodied reds – are often compared to Syrah and Cinsaut. They have red-berry flavors similar to Cinsaut, but with a touch more pepper and spice, and a tannin structure similar to Syrah's. Some Vaccarèse is used in Côtes du Rhône rosé wines along with Grenache.
