Information about Arbanne

Grape variety Arbanne
Grape colour Red grape
Variety Autochthonous
Vigour Excellent
Areas of cultivation The Arbane grape, in the vineyards of Bar-sur-Aube (France) and in the surrounding areas, is considered autochthonous and has resided in these territories for some hundreds of years.
History It was a Champagne grape before the invasion of phylloxera, even if the winemakers have always seemed an intruder in the vineyard. Someone in the Aube still tells that in some years the grapes remained so hard, and immature, that it could be put in the rifle to shoot the wild boars that invaded the vineyard.
Ampelographic features The vine is characterized by the production of clusters that accept berries of different sizes, ie small and large, the peel is rather thick and resistant, so that it creates some problems in pressing. It is a late vine, so it needs to be planted on well-exposed slopes.
Notes Then it is also not very productive and poor in health, although the hard peel is very sensitive to rot (even black), which explains why it was abandoned in favor of Pinot Noir and Meunier.
