Climate and soil	Norway's climate, both Atlantic and Arctic, is relatively mild compared to its latitude, thanks to the Gulf Stream, which heats up the seawater on the Atlantic coast from Mexico, making average annual temperatures above zero even in areas far north of the Arctic Circle.
History	The first settlements in Norway date back to around 8000 BC, as evidenced by cave paintings found in Alta, made by hunters who lived in the south and moved north during the summer. However, Norway was of little importance until the time of the Vikings. Around 700, the Vikings founded 29 small kingdoms in Norway, which were unified in 872 under King Harald I Hårfagre. This kingdom lasted until 1319. During this time dependencies such as the Isle of Man, the Kola Peninsula, Greenland and Iceland were acquired. Christianity was also introduced through Olav Haraldsson (today the country's patron saint). During World War I Norway remained neutral, although it became a supplier of supplies to Great Britain, which gave it the title of 'neutral ally'. During World War II, Norway remained neutral; however, due to its strategic location, it was invaded on 9 April 1940 (with Operation Weserübung) by Germany, which took possession of the territory and forced the Norwegian government into exile in London. Vidkun Quisling then took office in Norway and was appointed Fører of the whole country. During 1945, however, the Norwegian army gained positions on the Germans, thanks to the help of France and Great Britain. On 7 June of the same year the King of Norway was able to return home. In 1949 the country joined the NATO alliance.
