Information about Brazil

Region Brazil
Country Brazil
Climate and soil To the south of the Amazon rainforest lies the great highland region, which includes the Brazilian plateau and Mato Grosso. The plateaus, formed by ancient rocks covered with sandstone or limestone, slope gently downwards to the west and end in the east, towards the coast, with rounded granite peaks called 'sugar loaf'. There is also a narrow strip of flat land along the coast. The Brazilian climate has a wide variety of weather conditions, given the rich and varied topography of its territory, however, most of the country can be considered to have a tropical climate. The different climatic conditions produce different environments: in the north the climate is tropical with high temperatures throughout the year and abundant rainfall, although in the north-eastern region there is a semi-arid climate with high temperatures and little rainfall.
History Brazil has much in common with other Latin American countries, although it retains some of its own characteristics such as the Portuguese language. After gaining independence in 1822, the country alternated between democratic phases and dictatorial regimes born out of bitter internal conflicts, recurrent economic hardships and also huge differences between the various strata of the population.
Typical dishes Perhaps the most famous Brazilian dish is the 'feijoada', a black bean dish to which pork and beef are added. Seafood, especially in the north-east, has an important place in the cuisine. Among the crustaceans, 'caranguejo' (crab), sirì and shrimps are very popular.
