Areas of cultivation It is one of the most popular vines at national level and is cultivated on more than 61,000 hectares in almost all regions, although it is mainly found in Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria.
History The Tuscan Trebbiano vine originates in the other vineyards of the Trebbiani family, known in Italy since the Roman times. Their name derives from "Trebula", or a farm (Pliny the old man describes a "Vinum Trebulanum", which according to this interpretation would be "country wine" or "home-made wine"). Distinguishing the various clones, which bear a name often indicating their prevalence or the most diffused area, is not always that easy. History has brought the Tuscan Trebbiano to France under the name of Ugni Blanc, where it constitutes the basis for the production of Cognac and Armagnac, probably following the Pope's transfer to Avignon in the fourteenth century. Others date its diffusion altogether to the marriage of Caterina de 'Medici with Henry II of Valois, king of France.
Ampelographic features Leaf: large or medium-large; Pentagonal, quinquelobata; Closed-loop breast with overlapped edges; Upper side breasts with superimposed edges; Lower lateral thighs at parallel or narrow V; Flat lobby; Corner at the top of the lobes, sharp; Flat flap, sometimes slightly bent to eaves, with a bulky and somewhat wavy surface; Upper page glabra, medium green, medium or medium bright green with light green ribs; Lower side arachnid or lanugginosa, of light gray to green color, with ribs of 1st, 2nd and 3rd protruding order; Side teeth very pronounced, convex, but sometimes irregular, wide-spread. Bunch: large or medium-large (18-25 cm long and sometimes more); Semi-compact or semi-spatulate, elongated with one or two wings; Visible, herbaceous or semi-woody peduncle, medium long, greenish or hazy, large; Green. Acino: medium (diameter mm 13-15), discoid or spheroid form quite regular and uniform; Navel sometimes persistent, but not always; More or less pruinous, yellow-green or yellow-reddish, depending on the clone, much more resistant than the "Malvasia del Chianti"; Juicy juicy, on average consistently; Neutral flavor; Medium length pedal (mm 6-8) and green; Apparent search, less big than that of "Malvasia", of green; Medium but sometimes short brush, light green, translucent, not very resistant to detachment.
Characteristics of the wine obtained from this grape variety The wine obtained from the Tuscan trebbiano is straw yellow, the scent is intense and fruity, and the taste shows a discrete structure and a good balance.
Notes Resistance to diseases: common vermin parasites have a normal resistance; The grape is preserved with some ease in the fruit.
