Rheinhessen wines

The Rheinhessen, or Hessen Renana, is among the largest and most important wine regions in Germany. Here the cultivation of the vineyards is relatively young, whose development, started together with the birth of the first railways, suffered a significant decline due to the 2 world conflicts. Today, with over 26,000 hectares of vine-covered land, the area is back, however, to be the spearhead of German wine production, thanks to the shape of the landscape that benefits from the presence of different natural elements such as the Rhine and Moselle rivers, the Hunsruck volcanic plateau and the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge hilly system. Particularly fertile is the soil, composed in great proportion by the silty German löss, and followed to a lesser extent by sand and limestone mixtures. Also the climate of the Rheinhessen is allied to the cultivation of abundant grapes and of good quality: thanks to its temperate character, with warm summers and not too harsh winters, lets enjoy the land of a lot of sun, but without bringing the temperatures to excessive rises. Among the most fashionable production techniques in the area, there is a strong tendency towards productions based as much as possible on classic and natural methods, which sees the vineyards cultivated in a traditional way alongside the land treated with modern methods of biodynamic cultivation. Among the vines of the area prevail those cultivated with white grapes. The types of finest white wines are represented by Riesling, considered among the best in the world, by Sylvaner, Muskat and Müller-Thurgau.
