Port is a liqueur wine originating in Portugal, which is produced only from grapes indigenous to the Douro region. Port wine originated in the late 17th century, taking its name from the city from which it was exported. It was a poor wine born from the mixture of white wines fortified with brandy by sailors. From the 18th century onwards, it began to spread widely throughout Europe until it became one of the most popular fortified wines in the world.
