History The Carthaginians established a permanent trading area that the Romans called Carthago Nova. Roman Murcia was one of the Roman provinces that formed 'Hispania Tarraconensis'. The Arabs of al-Andalus, on the ruins of the settlement, founded Madīna Mursiya (City of Murcia), which soon became a flourishing centre dependent on Cordova and was several times the residence of the Caliph. The province was known as Todmir[3] and included, according to al-Idrīsī, an 11th century Arab Muslim cartographer, the cities of Murcia, Orihuela, Cartagena, Lorca, Mula and Chinchilla. From 1224 it was the capital of an independent Ta'ifa, until in 1243 it was conquered by Ferdinand III and annexed into the kingdom of Castile, whose fate it then followed.
