Primitivo di Manduria is among the most important and well-known red grape varieties in Apulia. As its name emphasises, it is mainly cultivated on the land surrounding Manduria and generally in the provinces of Brindisi and Taranto. Primitivo di Manduria has very ancient origins: originating from Dalmatia where some varieties are still cultivated today, it derives its name from the early ripening of the vine compared to others in the region. Since it has a high alcohol content, it was initially used to fortify delicate northern European and French wines. In recent years, however, the producers of Primitivo di Manduria have carried out intensive work by favouring low yields through scrupulous vinification, resulting in intense red wines of great finesse, freshness and elegance. The Manduria wine received the Controlled Denomination of Origin in 1974 with the identification of the production area between the territories of the municipalities of Brindisi and Taranto where the cultivation of these grapes is permitted.
