Marsala

The best Marsala only on xraWine!

Marsala is a Sicilian fortified wine that owes its fame to two English merchants, the Woodhouse brothers, who in 1770, during a trip to Sicily, tasted this wine reminiscent of Sherry and decided to market it in England. Given its enormous success, the two started a massive production in Sicily, thus spreading throughout the world. Today, Marsala wine is produced in almost all municipalities in the province of Trapani, with the exception of Alcamo and Favignana. Marsala liqueur differs within the DOC, giving rise to wines with different names depending on how it is produced. A first distinction concerns colour: it is produced in amber, ruby and golden colours. For the amber and golden varieties, the grape varieties used are Nero d'Avola, Catarratto, Damaschino, Grillo and Inzolia; while for the ruby varieties, Calabrese, Perricone and Nerello Mascalese are used. Even the Marsala wine-making system is not simple and depends on the variety of liqueur one wants to obtain: a compound called 'concia' is added to the base wine, a mixture of fresh must that cannot ferment due to the addition of cooked must and alcohol. The finest Marsala wines are aged in barrels according to an ancient Spanish method known as 'solera', in which wines from different vintages are constantly mixed so that the younger ones are absorbed by the older ones. xtraWine dedicates a wide selection of Marsala DOC wines, offering bottles that have received important awards from Bibenda and AIS. The bottles on xtraWine belong to the most prestigious wineries such as: Florio and Marco De Bartoli, with an ageing capacity even beyond 25 years.
