Collio Goriziano or Collio DOC wines indicate one of the most important wine-growing areas in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, which also includes the province of Gorizia. Collio wines are made from grape varieties such as: Malvasia Istriana, Chardonnay, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco, Picolit, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Ribolla Gialla, Merlot, Sauvignon, Tocai Friulano, Cabernet Franc, Gewürztraminer, Carmènere, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. Collio boasts around 1,500 hectares of vineyards located on a sequence of hills, with vast areas exposed to the sun, ideal for quality viticulture. It was the Romans who initiated the cultivation of vines in the Collio, which under the Goths first and the Lombards later, experienced its heyday. In the 17th century, the names of the wines produced in the Collio began to take shape, including Ribolla and Cividino among the whites and Refosco and Corvino among the reds. In particular, Gorizia's white wine is distinguished by a delicate straw yellow colour with golden or green reflections depending on the grape variety and vinification techniques. On the nose it releases decisive fruity aromas , while on the palate a remarkable softness with an almond aftertaste prevails. Collio red wines, on the other hand, have a bright ruby colour and a decisive aroma characterised by herbaceous hints.
