History	Taken over from the Arabs in 1235 by the Christian forces of James I, King of Aragon, it was the bishopric between 1782 and 1851. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) it was conquered by the Franks; together with the nearby island of Formentera, it later formed a base of operations for government forces.
Typical dishes	From fish to meat to typical Spanish dishes such as paella and tapas, this island has much to offer to lovers of the table. Tuna and race are the protagonists of typical fish dishes such as tonyina a l'eivissenca (tuna with pine nuts, raisins, eggs, spices, lemon juice and white wine) and borrida de ratjada (stew of race and potatoes with almonds). The meat is also excellent, which is found in the sofrit pages (composed of meats of different origins, sausages and potatoes) and in the arroz de matanzas (risotto accompanied with different meats) the most famous dishes.
