Barbera d'Asti with Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita is a very old wine: the first evidence can be found in a 17th-century writing, but it was not until 1798 that it was officially included in the list of Piedmontese grape varieties. Today, Barbera d'Asti is considered the main black grape variety in Piedmont. Barbera d'Asti DOCG is characterised by its deep red colour and an intense fruity aroma of plums, cherries and blackberries. On the palate when young it has a dry, floral and fresh flavour, while spicy characters predominate when aged.
