Abruzzo Wines: Origin and Territory

Abruzzo stretches between the Adriatic Sea and the imposing Apennines, a rich and generous region with unique characteristics. Here we find the highest peaks in central-southern Italy, with the majestic Gran Sasso and the majesty of the Majella. These territories are home to national and regional parks, which protect an exceptional variety of flora and fauna, giving Abruzzo the record for surface area of protected areas. In this land of natural beauty, vines have been cultivated since ancient times. The terroir of Abruzzo is characterised by strong temperature fluctuations, mountain and marine influences, a prestigious and fertile land with variable soils, from sand to rock. These elements have contributed to the qualitative consecration of Abruzzo wines. Great wineries such as Valentini, Emidio Pepe and Masciarelli have relaunched Abruzzi production from a past of quantity at low prices to a present of increasingly refined expressions, marked by quality and respect for the environment.

Production areas and grape varieties

Proceeding from north to south, Abruzzo offers geographically and morphologically diverse territories. Controguerra, on the Marche border, is a small area that produces international monovarietals such as Merlot and Cabernet, but also typical wines such as Passerina or Pecorino. Then we come to the Teramane hills, a large area that links the Gran Sasso to the Adriatic municipalities from Giulianova to Silvi Marina. Here Montepulciano is the symbol of the area, with its generous, vigorous, noble and deep character, capable of reflecting all its nuances. There is also no shortage of whites such as Passerina, Pecorino and Trebbiano.

Continuing southwards, we find the Pescarese area, divided between Terra dei Vestini and Casauria, where the artisan movement that led to regional success began. Here, spontaneous fermentation, organic approaches and biodynamic philosophies have resulted in wines that faithfully express the territory. Montepulciano reigns as the king of reds and Trebbiano is the queen of whites. We cannot forget the enclave of Loreto Aprutino, among the most prestigious and important areas of the peninsula, with fresh and mountainous expressions of great interest.

Finally, the province of Chieti is home to the largest production area, the Teate, which contributes over 80% of the region's production. Here, the large cooperatives have changed their approach, focusing on quality and enhancing native and international grape varieties, rooted in the long tradition of Abruzzo.
