Zacapa is a municipality in Guatemala where one of the world's most prized rums is produced: Ron Zacapa. xtraWine dedicates an extensive section to Zacapa rum, proposing its main products: Zacapa Rum Centenario 23 Solera, Zacapa Rum Centenario XO Solera and Zacapa Rum Edition Negra, which stand out for their fruity scents and full, rounded and smooth taste, resulting in products of great balance. The distillery was founded in 1940 by three families: Estrada, Girón and Gordillo, who began producing a rum made from pure sugar cane juice, called 'miel virgen' (virgin honey). The fermentation process lasts 5 days and involves the use of a yeast obtained from a proprietary strain extracted from pineapple, which gives it an unmistakable and constant aroma. Aged then on the heights of Quetzatenango, Zacapa manages to develop a refined style and its characteristic aroma at around 2,300 metres above sea level, in the so-called 'house above the clouds'. It is precisely this place, where the rum comes to life, that is the reason for its refinement: Zacapa rum is the result of a perfect combination of climate, terroir and natural ingredients, characterised by the different stages of production that reflect a high level of craftsmanship from the cultivation of the sugar cane to distillation, ageing and bottling.
