Climate and soil	The Puerto Rican territory consists of volcanic and plutonic rocks from the Cretaceous and Eocene periods, buried by more recent Oligocene limestones and other sedimentary rocks. Most of the caves and karst formations are found in the northern region, dating from the Oligocene and recent carbonate periods. The oldest rocks, which belong to the Jurassic period and are approximately one hundred and ninety million years old, are located in the Sierra Bermeja, a small mountain range in the south-west of the island.
History	The history of the island of Puerto Rico before the arrival of Christopher Columbus is not very clear. What is known today comes mainly from archaeological discoveries and transcriptions of oral histories of the Spanish. The first in-depth book on the history of Puerto Rico was not written by Fray Íñigo Abbad y Lasierra until 1776, i.e. 283 years after the Spanish settled on the island. Today, the island has become a popular tourist destination and an important pharmaceutical and manufacturing industrial centre. However, the 'struggle' to define political status has never stopped. In recent decades, three plebiscites have been authorised locally to decide whether Puerto Rico should consolidate the Commonwealth or apply to become a fully-fledged US federal state; but after three narrow victories by Commonwealth supporters, nothing has actually changed in relations with the US.
