Climate and soil	The climate, which tends to be tropical, varies according to the altitude of the different areas of the country. The coastal area is characterized by a dry period in winter (from November to April) and a rainy period in summer. At the end of the summer the east coast is at risk of hurricanes: in 1998 the country was hit by hurricane Mitch and in 2005 by hurricane Stan with over 1500 victims due to floods. In the coastal areas and plains the average temperature fluctuates between 21 and 27 ° C while on the hills and on the plateaus the climate is more temperate with averages ranging from 10 to 16 ° C and sensitive excursions throughout the day.
History	Inhabited mainly by Mayan populations, Guatemala was conquered by the Spaniards in 1523-25. Under the Viceroyalty of New Spain (established in 1535), the Audiencia of Guatemala exercised its jurisdiction over all of Central America. After the destruction by an earthquake (1773) of the ancient capital, it was transferred to the new city of Guatemala, founded in 1776 not far from the previous one. In the traditional subsistence farming (cereals, legumes), the Spaniards flanked the cattle breeding and the sugarcane and cocoa plantations; throughout the colonial period, however, commercial development was limited. Starting from the 17th century the allocation of British settlers in the territory of present-day Belize gradually removed control from the Spanish authorities, laying the foundations for the birth of British Honduras. Mexico's declaration of independence in 1821 was followed by that of the Central American provinces, which in 1822 accepted the unification with Mexico proposed by A. Iturbide (crowned emperor). The resistance of the liberals was militarily suppressed, but after the abdication (1823) of Iturbide, a constituent assembly proclaimed the independence of the United Provinces of Central America. While the Chiapas remained incorporated in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica entered the new federation (capital Guatemala), which, tormented by continuous power struggles, dissolved in 1839.
Typical products	Zacapa rum is a rather flashy, freshly brewed, and to drink pure or with ice; if it is drunk with water it releases an aroma of incense. It is amber-colored, dark brown in color, and aromas of barrel are visible on the nose. On the palate the taste of toasted hazelnut is discovered with a hint of caramel but is considered too easy to drink. It is aged with the solera method and for many it is better in the world: it won the International Rum Festival Tasting Competition, an annual competition where connoisseurs taste the various rums to which they give a score, from 1998 to 2001 with 98/100.
Typical dishes	The cuisine of Guatemala is not very different from that of neighboring Mexico, and although a little poorer, still offers the opportunity to try numerous dishes. Everywhere you can find tortillas, black beans, enchillada and numerous types of meat and fish (excellent seafood) grilled and less spicy than in Mexico. Excellent, as in all tropical countries, fruit production. Among the drinks, beer is common, both light and dark, generally not very alcoholic.
