Climate and soil The climate of the Netherlands is temperate oceanic, therefore it is definable mostly like Atlantic on the coasts and toward the cold continental inside.
History Subdued by Julius Caesar in the 1st century BC, the southern part of the territory, together with the Rhine Limes, formed the northern border of the Roman world until the fall of the Western Roman Empire (5th century). Following the barbarian invasions, Saxons, Batavians, Frisians and Franks settled in the area. In the 8th century the Netherlands was part of the Carolingian Empire founded by Charlemagne and in the 10th century of the Holy Roman Empire. The Netherlands proclaimed its neutrality in both world wars. In the first it was largely respected and the war had only economic consequences. During World War II, the country was occupied by Nazi Germany during the French campaign.
Typical dishes Generally, in the Netherlands, as in many other northern European countries, the main meal is the evening meal, between 6 and 7 p.m., usually consisting of a single dish, possibly preceded by a soup or followed by a dessert. For this reason, the dishes in which the Dutch culinary tradition is best expressed are one-course meals. Very often lunch is eaten outside the home, which is why there is a strong tradition of street food in the Netherlands. Restaurants usually operate continuously from 11 am to 10 pm.
