Wess Rainer

The winery Rainer Wess was founded in 2003 in a cellar rented by Rainer Wess in Unterloiben. The opportunity arose as a result of a number of national as well as international activities in the world of wine. Soon this cellar was too small and a new site was required. In 2009, it was possible to purchase former cellar buildings owned by the Wilhering Abbey, located in Sandgrube in Krems.

The cellar has since been renovated and extended with a modern grape reception area. This allows the most gentle grape processing with the natural aid of gravity, without pumping. The next step was to purchase a vineyard, and this was made possible in Loibenberg, followed by Stein shortly afterwards. More vineyards were leased in the in Kremstal valley.

Today we cultivate approximately 12 hectares, and purchase a further two hectares of grapes. The estate is a member of the “Österreichischen Traditionsweingüter”, (lit. Association of Austrian Traditional Wineries), and has set itself the goal of bringing the potential of the distinctive, great vineyard sites into the glass of wine, as purely and genuinely as possible.
