Tuzko-Bataapati (Antinori)

The Tuzko estate is situated in the hills of Tolna near the Danube, 150 kilometers (some 90 miles) to the south of Budapest.
The Tuzko Bátaapáti project began in the early 1990’s, when Hungary opened its frontiers to potential foreign investors. The long history and important potential of this area have always fascinated Italians. Under the aegis of Peter Zwack (the fifth generation of the noted Hungarian family which produces digestifs) , Jacopo Mazzei (strongly linked to the world of wine by family tradition) and Piero Antinori began the search for vineyards capable of production of high level wine.

This research, after careful analysis of the soil and of climatic data, concluded in 1991 with the purchase of the Tuzko estate. The new proprietors had been struck, above and beyond the quality of the wines produced in the area, by the beauty of the landscape and the historic presence of the vine on the land of the estate, testified to as well by the presence of underground cellars.
Given the encouraging results, in the year 2000 the Marchesi Antinori firm decided to increase its commitment to the project, taking direct control of the property.

The vineyards are planted to local and international varieties which here express themselves at elevated levels:
- 70 hectares planted to white grape varieties, principally Chardonnay, Zöldveltelini, and Tramini and, to a lesser extent, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Rhine Riesling;
- 70 ettari planted to red grape varieties , prevalently Kékfrankos and Merlot and, in minor quantities, Zweigelt, Bìborkadarka, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Nero, and Kékoporto.

The production philosophy of Tuzko aims at obtaining the finest varietal expression in the wines by single-variety fermentations of the different grapes. Particular attention is given to native varieties, both red and white.
