Information about Rossara Trentina

Grape variety Rossara Trentina
Synonyms Rossera, "Geschlafene" (Goethe, 1876).
Grape colour Red grape
Variety Autochthonous
Vigour Excellent
Ripening Early October.
Productivity Abundant and constant, but with slight dripping and milling.
History Rossara is a vine of uncertain origins. The Acerbi (1825) mentions a Rossara durasa among the vines cultivated near Trento. He then distinguishes the cultivar in two different variants, a major and a minor one, perhaps the Edelgeschlafene of the Caldaro area, with small and colored berries. The light red color of the ripening peel unites the Rossara of Trentino to some vines with the same semantic origin of the name (Rossana, Rossanino, Rossola, Rossetta, Rossolina etc.) but genetically very distant. The numerous descriptions of these vines by the ampelographers of the 1800s and early 1900s (Acerbi, 1825; Gallesio, 1834; Rovasenda, 1877; Goethe, 1878; Marzotto, 1925; Dalmasso, 1937) are very summary, so it is very difficult to differentiate them. The German denomination of Geschlafene instead recalls the name given in Trentino in the Middle Ages to Schiava, that is Sclaf as documented in 1259, when Mori was identified with the Schiava (Sclava) with Rossara (Forni e Scienza, 1996). Even the less frequent denomination "Welsche" identifies Rossara with Schiava.
Ampelographic features Leaf: of medium size, orbicular, trilobate or nearly whole, petiolar sinus to V, shallow lateral V-shaped sinuses, missing or just the lower ones; hairless upper page, deep green, opaque; lower arachnoid page and light olive-green color; thick, bulky, slightly folded eaves and with revolute margins; lobes not very marked and slightly twisted, angle at the top of the terminal lobe almost straight; irregular, moderately pronounced teeth, concave on one side and convex on the other, acute; main veins of green color with the reddish base, protruding. Bunch: large (about 20 cm long), elongated, cylinder-pyramidal, often with one or two wings, a little compact; visible peduncle, herbaceous, of medium thickness and of green-yellowish color. Berry: medium (transverse diameter 16.9 mm), spheroid, regular, persistent navel, regular cross section; skin slightly pruinose, red-violet, thin, tender; very juicy, melted, neutral flavor; colorless juice; short pedicels with evident, verrucous, green hairline; short and thick brush, slightly pink.
Characteristics of the wine obtained from this grape variety Rosé-garnet colored wine, to the sense of smell a spicy-vegetal aroma is perceived, the taste has medium-low acidity, with good flavor and appears slightly bitter, light and poor in body.
