Meyer-Nakel

The name "Ahr" comes from the Celtic word "Aha" for water. Here, it cuts into the Ahr Mountains in a deep and steep gorge with rugged rocks and crevices. This is not only a wild, romantic, picturesque sight, but also the basis for growing red wine in the "far north" of winegrowing. The Romans had already settled here due to the special climatic conditions offered by the Ahr valley with its steep slopes that are optimally inclined to the sun's rays.

The area lies in the rain shadow of the Eifel and the High Fens, which means that we have more hours of sunshine over the course of the year. All of this contributes to the fact that there is an almost Mediterranean climate here in summer - perfect for the perfect ripening of red grape varieties. This is why the Ahr is the third smallest wine-growing region in Germany, but the largest contiguous area for growing red wine.
