History	Until 1920-21, Burgenland was part of Hungary, although it was predominantly German-speaking. After the end of the First World War, the region was assigned to an Italian occupation corps. After years of struggles and negotiations, the Treaty of Saint-Germain assigned it to Austria. There was a strong opposition from Hungary, which led first to the secession as Banat of Leithania and then to the organization of a plebiscite (thanks to the Italian protection), in which the population voted for membership of Austria, except in the area of Ödenburg (in Hungarian Sopron), initially planned as the capital of the region, where the population voted for membership of Hungary.
